Cloneversation: Alison Is My Favorite Clone

By  |

Alison Hendrix is my favorite Clone. I’m being completely serious. I went into Orphan Black expecting to hate her, but by the end of the show I started identifying with her, and I think she is totally underappreciated in the fandom.

As an aside, I do not advocate the use of torture by hot glue gun. That shit hurts. Oh, and you know. Spoilers.

Alison is far from perfect. She makes a lot of mistakes throughout the course of season one, from attacking her husband with a golf club to letting a woman she once considered a close friend die. Where this lands her in season two will make for excellent drama.

One of my favorite things about her is her relationship with Felix. It has been said by both the writers and the actors that there are more similarities between these two than they themselves realize, from their attitude to their physical mannerisms. But when the going gets tough, and Alison needs someone in her corner, Felix steps up. When her life feels like it is crumbling around her, Felix is there for her.

May everyone have a friend like Felix to encourage you to say ‘eff everything.’

What makes Alison my favorite character in Orphan Black is her complexity. She is a young woman who married her high school sweetheart and whose suburban marriage is far from perfect. She could not conceive children of her own, and so they adopted. She lost Beth, possibly one of the stable points in her life after the discovery of being a clone. She is scared for her life because, given the evidence, women just like her are being studied under a microscope and murdered. Everything she thinks she knows has been turned on its head, and she deals with it the best she can. The writers are not afraid to show her flaws, which does not always make her likeable or even palatable.

But I’m pretty sure that’s why I love her.

I do not look forward to the moment where she discovers that her husband Donny has been her monitor all of this time. The betrayal may destroy her.

Orphan Black Season 2 premieres Saturday April 19 at 9PM on BBC America.

Purple-haired Pepper Potts.

Alison is my favorite as well, a desperate housewife, who has the most compelling character arc. She also provides the best comic relief.

  2. The bad guy
