I Want to Go Hang with the Lumberjanes

By  |

I love the trend for stories that focus on magical realism, with those weird little surreal nods to the supernatural being the norm. Just when I thought I was getting tired of it, of that slow creeping horror humor and the unending Twitter accounts like Horrorscopes and Dread Singles, along came Lumberjanes, and my faith was restored. Described as Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets Gravity Falls, you better move over, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, because Miss Quinzella Thiskwin Penniguiqul Thistle Crumpet’s Camp for Hardcore Lady Types is bringing Friendship to the Max! (Wow, that was a lot of namedrops and one wordy campe title.)

I wish my summer camp experience had been anything like that of the Lumberjanes. I don’t look back at those summers with much fondness, two weeks of alternating frustration and boredom. I’m definitely one of the least outdoorsy types there ever was, but paging through Lumberjanes felt like all I wish those trips had been. And the cast! They’re so adorable! The girls are all different, falling into the pattern of personality tropes while somehow bubbling out of their molds. This is a comic about girls, written by women, designed and illustrated by women, and it’s just sort of everything we love here at Princess vs Peril.  It leaves you feeling warm and fuzzy and cheering for more.

You had to had to have been there.

You can pick up Lumberjanes at your local comic shop for $3.99 or grab it digitally on Comixology. It’s only going to be an eight issue series, and I’m going to be sad when it ends. But in the meantime, here’s that mixtape from the back of the comic, courtesy of 8tracks! (I hope this is a continuing thing. I really really do.) [Update @ 1:47PM: Looks like all of the mixtapes are gone from 8tracks. Boo. :( -Rachel]

This comic looks awesome! Was the playlist taken down over some kind of copyright issue? (Is a playlist intellectual property?) Anyway, I won’t post a link but a search for ‘lumberjanes’ on 8tracks still has what you’re looking for. :)

I’m not sure! There were three of them when I wrote this post, then none when it was published. And if I try to search for it, I get no results! CURIOUS AND CURIOUSER.

The playlist is great though, I’ll have to at least make it myself in my iTunes library.

Oh hey! When I type lumberjanes in the top right search bar I don’t see anything either, but I can still see 4 results when searching for lumberjanes in the Explore section (ie. Most curious indeed!

And yes, definitely an awesome playlist. :D
